I’m good at some things. One of them being choosing wisely in the ways of Netflix shows. I’m not quite sure why, but I have made my way through a few series lately, the majority of them being really good. Is it sad when one of my favorite topics of conversation is: “What have you been watching lately?” it might be sad, but it is also true. When someone has watched all the same shows as me, I know we’ll get along.
I mean…I love a good television experience. And I’m willing to review some of my faves so that if you’re ever asked what you’ve been watching lately, you’ll be really cool instantly.
From the guy who brought us Girls (SO GOOD) comes this Netflix Original. It’s about 2 people (pictured above, Einstein) who find each other and how they navigate their relationship…friendship/romantic/etc. It’s hysterical and a little sad at times and always entertaining. It’s also a little inappropriate which I should probably just warn everyone about now…most of these films are a bit inappropriate (sex, language, drugs, violence)…but no one is going to watch Peppa Pig or Jake and the Neverland Pirates after the kids go to bed, right? We’re all adults here….
2. Fruitvale Station
This isn’t a series, it’s a movie…a really good one at that. It’s about a young black man who is shot and killed by police officers at a train station. It starts well before the incident occurs and walks you through the kind of guy he is, what he’s been through, what he’s doing to get his life on track, his loved ones, and ends with his death. It’s based on a true story and is worth the watch.
I love almost everything the Brits produce. They’re just awesome, AM I RIGHT? This series (there are two seasons) begins with the body of a young boy found on the beach. The two detectives pictured above try their very hardest to discover who killed the boy and why…the end of the first season reveals the killer and it’s no one you would expect. It’s not action packed and is kind of slow moving but always had my attention and I always wanted to start the next episode right away. It’s always a good sign when I’m sad it’s over and that was the case with this.
4. Short Term 12
Another movie. The story is centered around the girl pictured above who is the director for a children’s home — a place for children who aren’t in the foster care system but who don’t live at home. It’s really sad and depressing but so good and touches all your feelers. That’s good sometimes.
5. Black Mirror
Another British series. This is bizarre, let me tell you. Also, really inappropriate. Lots of sex and lots of bad language. So if you can’t deal with that, move along. It’s kind of like The Twilight Zone in that each episode is a different story, not connected to the one before it. It takes place in a futuristic society with lots of technological advancements. Things like recalling your entire day thanks to implants in your eyes that make it so you can rewind and watch all your memories again. “Communicating” with the dead. It’s basically a message that technology isn’t always that great…but the episodes are entertaining and weird.
There are so many more, but five at a time is all you get.
